Brandy and Monica: The Whitney is Mine

Yesterday was Whitney Houstons birthday. A day that’s bittersweet considering the icon’s death in 2012. What should’ve been a day of reminiscing and paying respects turned into another episode in the saga of Brandy and Monica’s ongoing feud.

Here’s a brief stroll down memory lane…

Brandy and Monica allegedly had bad blood back in the mid to late 90’s when they were both on the rise in the R&B industry. Due to their similar ages and musical audience, they were immediately pitted against each other. Both claim there was really no ill will and teamed up to record the iconic hit “The Boy is Mine” in 1998 which also earned a Grammy.

However, over the years there have been flare ups of discord between the two divas mostly centered around Whitney Houston. Whitney infamously interrupted an interview that Brandy was doing just hours before her death and gave her a note that Brandy has never revealed the contents of. Also, Whitney was rumored to be romantically involved with Brandy’s brother Ray J. This relationship is so important to Brandy that she gets very upset when anyone discounts their closeness…..emphasis on very.

Fast forward to the past couple of years and the friction between the two ladies always seems to go back to which one was closest to Whitney. To Monica’s credit, she seems to take the high road when asked about the tension. I guess having a good looking husband and stable family life will have that effect on you. However, this time around there is no doubt that Brandy is clearly the aggressor. Both women made posts about Whitney on their Instagram accounts and users couldn’t help but notice the difference in the posts.

Some claim that Monica’s tribute was about Whitney while Brandy’s was all about her relationship with Whitney. Brandy went on to say that Whitney passed the torch to her and that was evident by her passing away on her birthday. ummmm…yeah. She went on to share more tribute posts but not before addressing Monica and her fans in a long, scathing Instagram comment.

The reaction was over the top to say the least and to put the blame square on Monica as if she can control internet trolls is just plain wrong. At this point it comes off as if Brandy is just looking for any reaction from her rival and Monica remains silent and unbothered.

This isn’t the first time that fans have seemed to rattle Ms.Norwood. A few weeks ago she posted a picture with Mariah with the caption #sheknowsme that many thought was shade and alluded to Mariah’s alleged feud with Jennifer Lopez. Instead of letting it go, once again Brandy became defensive in a rant and called out those in the comments for “stirring up drama”.

At this point one has to ask, “Where is Brandy’s controlling ass mama and why hasn’t she told her daughter to delete her account?” Miss Sonya Norwood is well known in the industry for overstepping when it comes to her children’s career and image, (we can debate on how successful she’s been at it), so why has she not stepped in here?

Brandy is a talented singer, I still bump her older music to this day. But she’s going to fall into the abyss of other celebrities who don’t know how to use social media correctly and find their careers decline simply because fans don’t like them as a person. Social media can be a gift for celebrities when it comes to reaching out to fans and promoting their projects, but it also has a very dark side. You have to have thick skin in order to deal with those that troll the internet all day just to leave nasty comments hoping to get any kind of reaction.

Some celebrities can handle social media, some can’t. I just have one message for Brandy.

Dear Brandy,

You can’t handle Instagram. Do yourself and career a favor, delete your account.

Sincerely,

Everyone.
